Some authors consider the Northern Wren from Western North America as a separate species: the Pacific Wren, Troglodytes pacificus. In the Handbook of the Birds of the World, the birds from this region are still considered as a subspecies of Northern Wren, Troglodytes troglodytes ssp. pacificus.
